Study Guide for Cells and Cell Organelles

Use the following websites to help you study for the Test on Cells and functions of Organelles (in a Animal and Plant Cell):

Cell Organelles & Functions 1 (*This is from the Powerpoint Lesson I showed in class)

Is it a Plant or Animal? (UEN)

CELLS alive! Website (animated version of an Animal or Plant Cell)

These videos are good ones that discuss all the parts of a cell:

Here are some pictures to help you understand more about Animal and Plant cells. *Click on them to see them bigger:

*For the test, you will also need to know about:
- Cell Organization (cells --> tissues --> organs --> organ systems)
- The Cell Theory
- Photosynthesis

Here's a practice QUIZ to study from. It's a little more advanced, but check it out- SoftSchools QUIZ- The Cell and Cell Structure

In addition, do the following Quizlets in order to prepare for the Exam on Cells and Cell Organelles:

Cell Organelle Research Worksheet (WEBQUEST)

Class, this post is for your Webquest assignment on Cell organelles, now that you've learned about the basic cell. This will be done over 2 days (you can use headphones).
Your task is to research different cell organelles and describe the function and structure of each one, draw pictures of the organelles (with labels), and identify if they belong in animal cells, plant cells, or both. Also, write an analogy/metaphor for each organelle. Focus more of the FUNCTION of the cell organelles.

Use the following websites to help you fill in all pages of the packet. Your Textbook is also available to use, on pages 364-367. Remember, ONLY use the following websites!:

Biology 4 Kids (look for Cell Organelles on right side)

Cell Organelles & Functions 2 (Use this PPT to help you understand the structures of cell organelles and their functions)

Kidtopia (Google for kids)

BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation)

Cell Organelle Table

BrainPop Video- Cell Structures

Flocabulary Video- Cells

Parts of the Cell (Ducksters)

Bacteria (Ducksters)

Cells Alive! (click on Interactive Cell Models-- Animal, Plant, or Bacteria cell)

Cell Videos (neoK12)
_____________________________________________________________________

The Cell Theory:
n1) All living things are made of one or more cells.
n2) The cell is the basic unit of life in which the activities of an organism occur.

n3) All cells come from cells that already exist.

Understanding the difference between Physical and Chemical changes

Class, here are more notes to help you understand the difference

between Physical and Chemical changes.

Physical changes:
1)Appearance can change, but substance keeps the same identity.
2)You can always go back to the original substance.

Chemical changes:
1)Substance formed is new. New molecular arrangement.
2)You can not go back to the original substance (not reversible).

This This is another way of thinking about the differences:
During a chemical change, there is a change in the chemical composition of the original molecules. New elements or compounds form at the end, with a different arrangement of atoms. Bonds break and reform! But in a physical change the molecules stay the same, they just move farther apart or closer. Look at the picture below to see the differences:

(notice how the arrangement of atoms changed when water became hydrogen peroxide)

Here are videos to help you understand the differences
too. Click on here-
BrainPop- Property Changes

Also, click on here to watch several videos-
Physical and Chemical changes

Remember these 2 important concepts:

The Law of Conservation of Mass:

During a chemical reaction, the mass of what you end with is
always the same as the mass of what you start with.

 Chemical reaction:

occurs when you start with one molecule and turn

it into a new one. Chemical bonds are made or

broken in order to create this new molecule.

Finally, here is a great article that details the difference between both types of changes- The Ice-Cube Tray and the Frying Pan
