Outline and Rubric for Science Article essays

Class, follow these steps to get a 100!
Here are some tips/hints to help you when writing your Science Article essay:

- Use Microsoft Word/Google Docs to type your essay. Print it out or share it with me.
- Have a cover sheet (staple it to the essay), it can include a picture.
- Type or write your class heading at the top of your essay.
- Include a full heading on the top of the page, with an original Title below, in the center.
- Organize your paper properly and include an introduction with a topic sentence, 2-3 supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion.
- Indent your paragraphs; each paragraph should be around 5-6 sentences long; use transition words between paragraphs.
- The font should be 12-14 size (if typed).
- Double or single space your essay.
- Write about current topics only (within the last month)
- Type or write it in your own words neatly (no plagiarism!)
- Encourage the use of science Vocabulary that we have learned.
- If necessary (i.e. refuting a misconception), include evidence from a lab experiment, topics from class discussions and/or examples you've learned about to clear up this misconception.
- The title of the article should be in "quotation marks" no matter where you find it (online, magazine, or newspaper).
- The name of a magazine, newspaper company, or website should be underlined or italicized.
- Extra Info- the title of a book, T.V. show, or movie should also be in italics; the name of a song should be in "quotation marks."
- Follow all the steps of the outline! Make sure to answer all the questions shown, in an essay format, including the picture.
- *Tip: Explain one or two main ideas in detail instead of writing a long list of everything you read about in the article. Clarify your key points, elaborate, include quotes (if you'd like).
- The picture can be drawn, printed from online (can be black & white), or inserted using Google images.
- Check for correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors before writing your final draft.
- Staple all your pages together! (or submit them as a Google doc).
