Forms of Energy

All energy comes from either the main 2 forms, Kinetic or Potential energy. So the forms of energy shown below can either be classified as kinetic or potential energy. Copy down everything you see here, and draw a picture or example of each one, showing that type of energy:

1) Nuclear/Atomic Energy is stored in the nucleus of an atom and released when you split atoms.

2) Chemical energy is a form of potential energy that is stored in organisms, food, gasoline, or chemical bonds of molecules.

3) Electrical energy is produced by electrons moving through a wire; it's a natural and man-made energy form.

4) Mechanical energy is the energy in the motion of objects. All moving objects have mechanical energy.

5) Sound energy is produced when a solid, liquid, or gas vibrates. Sound energy travels out as waves in all directions.

6) Thermal energy is the energy of molecular movement. The faster the molecules move, the more thermal energy is present. Heat is the transfer of thermal energy. So when thermal energy moves from object to object, we feel it as heat.

7) Light (radiant) energy is a form of energy produced by the sun and lamps; it's visible to the human eye

Understanding the difference between Physical and Chemical changes

Class, here are more notes to help you understand the difference

between Physical and Chemical changes.

•Physical changes:
1)Appearance can change, but substance keeps the same identity.
2)You can always go back to the original substance.

•Chemical changes:
1)Substance formed is new. New molecular arrangement.
2)You can not go back to the original substance (not reversible).

This This is another way of thinking about the differences:
During a chemical change, there is a change in the chemical composition of the original molecules. New elements or compounds form at the end, with a different arrangement of atoms. Bonds break and reform! But in a physical change the molecules stay the same, they just move farther apart or closer. Look at the picture below to see the differences:

(notice how the arrangement of atoms changed when water became hydrogen peroxide)

Here are videos to help you understand the differences
too. Click on here-
BrainPop- Property Changes

Also, click on here to watch several videos-
Physical and Chemical changes

Remember these 2 important concepts:

The Law of Conservation of Mass:

During a chemical reaction, the mass of what you end with is
always the same as the mass of what you start with.

 Chemical reaction:

occurs when you start with one molecule and turn

it into a new one. Chemical bonds are made or

broken in order to create this new molecule.

Finally, here is a great article that details the difference between both types of changes- The Ice-Cube Tray and the Frying Pan

Solutions and Solubility

Class, here are some pictures and videos on Solutions and Solubility. Watch them and compare with your class notes. Hope it helps.

A hot solvent can usually hold more solute than a cool solvent can (temperature increase).
But if a hot saturated solution is cooled slowly, sometimes the excess solute remains dissolved for a period of time (it doesn't settle yet).
Such a solution is said to be supersaturated, because it contains more than the normal amount of solute that can be dissolved at a lower temperature (it went over its limit).

The following are Summary Notes for this topic. Feel free to look at it and print it if you want:

Periodic Table Vocabulary (for LAB too)

Class, here are some important Vocabulary words to know about the Periodic Table:

malleable- can be bent into various shapes.

brittle- can break easily

reflective luster- shiny

dull- not shiny

ductile- can be made into wires

isotopes- atoms of the same element that have different number of neutrons

noble gases- elements in the last group of the Periodic Table (Group 18) that are very stable and don't react with other elements. They exist on their own.

Click on the following box to read more about what Metalloids are:

Here's a picture of the Periodic Table. Click on it to see it bigger. **If you can't see it too well because it's blurry, you can see a clearer picture of this Periodic Table by clicking on this link --> Periodic Table diagram

Periodic Table, Analyzing an Element

The Periodic table:
•Organizes and classifies the elements in columns and rows, based on their properties
•Elements in the same group (column) react in similar ways. So they have similar properties.
•Elements on the periodic table are divided into metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.
•Each element is different (has it's own atomic number) and has unique properties.
•Altogether the elements are arranged in sequence by their atomic number.

These pictures shown in class indicate what the numbers and symbols mean for each element found on the Periodic Table. Study this, you will be tested on it!

Check out this cool song on the Periodic Table!:

Here is a BrainPopJr video from class on Physical and Chemical changes. Just click on here- BrainPopJr Video.

Here's another video on Physical vs Chemical changes:

In addition, here is a picture I was showing you in class comparing Physical and Chemical properties. Remember, a physical property is a characteristic of matter that you can measure or observe. And a chemical property is the ability of a substance to change into something NEW, by reacting with certain things.

Wave creation

On a long white piece of paper, create 2 waves with a pencil and a ruler. One with a high frequency, one with a low frequency. Measure the wavelength and amplitude of each wave and record it in cm, using a ruler. Put the paper in a vertical position
On your two waves, label and measure its:
•Crest
•Trough
•Wavelength (with its measurement)
•Amplitude (with its measurement)
•Frequency (measure the # of crests)

Then record this information under your drawings too. In addition, answer these questions:
      2) Describe what type of waves you drew.
      3) As the frequency of a wave increases, it’s wavelength _______________.
      4) Where do you find these types of waves in real-life? Give 3 examples.

Here is an example of what it looks like:
